Why Most Tax Strategies Fail: The Implementation Gap

October 12, 2026

Most tax strategies don't fail because the idea is wrong. They fail because nobody carries them out.

What the gap looks like

  • A strategy is discussed in a meeting, then no one owns the next step.
  • The entity is never formed, the asset never placed in service, the hours never tracked.
  • December arrives, and the window has closed.

That distance between *knowing* and *doing* is the implementation gap, the subject of Chapter 3 of The Zero Tax Strategy.

Four steps to close it

1. Tax projection. Know your likely number while there is still time to change it. 2. Core strategy. Put the foundational moves in place: entity structure, retirement plans, accountable plans. 3. Advanced strategy. Where it fits your facts, consider tools like depreciation that require more planning and documentation. 4. Implement by 12/31. Put dates on the calendar and assign an owner to every action.

Execution is the strategy

Plans don't reduce taxes. Actions do. The best advisors don't just recommend; they make sure it happens, and that it is documented as it happens.
